About Allen Bike Racks: In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities. Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allen's tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three-dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world. Solid Bike Rack February 3, 2010 Mitchell Pansano, Jr. This product has proved to be a very solid and reliable bike rack for the money. I don't use it everyday so didn't want to pay a fortune, this rack was the right choice for me. It has held up very well. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it seems to have a little more "play" between the components that some of the higher end racks, but this is not an issue, just being a little picky. The fold down feature is great also. This is a great rack for the money and will last a long long time.
This thing is solid! October 2, 2009 Scott Hartrick (PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great rack. Does not rock one bit when installed in the hitch receiver. I did, however, replace the pin that allows the neck to fold down with a bolt because I installed this on a sedan, so I didn't have a problem opening the trunk. That made it even more soild.
So far so GOOD September 11, 2009 Vincent M. Cipriano (NJ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have purchased this a few months ago and have used it 4 times. It holds a Mens 26" bike and womens 24" bike and a kids 16" bike just fine. The only thing that I have noticed it that is dose sway when driving. But I have not noticed and issues with it. We are useing this on a Trailblazer LTZ. IT is not used daily only on beach trips or the ocasional road trip.. Good for the price
Great light duty rack September 9, 2009 D. Winters 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Allen Bike Rack is a great light duty rack. I like the folding feature so it can be left on my SUV without worry of someone walking into it. The only thing that I have noticed is that the rack is a little wobbly, but not that big of a deal and that several holes need to be drilled just a little larger, the rack can still be used. Over all, a good Bike Rack for the price.
Great bike rack July 11, 2009 Steve (Sykesville, MD) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Works as advertised! We took a 300 mile trip to the beach with this rack and our two bikes were rock solid as we went down the road. Easy installation, folds down easily, and nice tilt feature for trunk access.
